Please Excuse the Dust

Over last weekend, we transitioned from our old domain to NetbookScoop.com. We had planned for a very smooth and seamless transition.
For the most part it was.
However, behind the scenes we’ve been scurrying to address a few nagging issues. Hopefully, none of this has been obvious to you.
But if you’ve been active on our site during those brief times when pages didn’t render properly… Or when error messages were displayed in the sidebar… Or when we briefly crashed the server (twice)… Then please accept our apology.
At this point, I believe the worst is behind us. You should expect smooth sailing from here on out.
The ULPC Scoop Is Now Netbook Scoop
Posted by Tom Greer on April 26, 2009 in Falling Prices, Netbook Market, Netbooks, Nettops, Site-related
Welcome to the Netbook Scoop!
We started life last June as The ULPC Scoop at http://ulpcs.com. We started covering what were called, at the time, Ultra Low-cost PCs.
The term “ULPC” was coined by Microsoft. Around the same time, Intel began to use term “netbook” to refer to the same products. The netbook term stuck.
We finally decided it was time to abandon the ULPC term and to rename our site something more appropriate.
So here we are at http://www.netbookscoop.com.
We cover all things netbook. We also slip in some coverage of nettops as well.
Some of our most popular features:
- Our Compare Netbook Prices pages
- Our (almost) daily Falling Netbook Prices articles
- Our Refurbished and Open Box netbook lists
If you are new here, please take a look around and write comments (on virtually any page) to tell us what you like and what you’d like us to do to improve our site to better meet your needs.
We’re Getting Ready To Move
Posted by Tom Greer on April 24, 2009 in Site-related
We’ve been working behind the scenes to move to a new domain. We accidentally affected our production site overnight and caused some rather odd behavior. That’s all fixed now. If you were affected, please accept our apology.
We expect that by Monday morning, The ULPC Scoop will become The Netbook Scoop. The site is operational now. But we still have some testing to do.
You should find yourself automatically redirected once we have everything in place.
Selecting My New Netbook, The End
Posted by Tom Greer on April 19, 2009 in Dell Netbooks, HP Netbooks, Netbooks, Site-related
I’ve made the process of selecting my new netbooks a long, drawn out process so that I could share what I learned.
Here is what I posted earlier:
I dropped my briefcase containing my notebook and netbook while traveling. Shortly thereafter, my netbook became dysfunctional. So I need a new netbook.
In Part 1, I defined my needs and wants. Then I decided which netbooks were possibilities.
In Part 2, I investigated the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and decided that was out.
In Part 3, I looked at the Dell Inspiron Mini 12 and decided it was definitely in.
In Part 4, I inspected the 10″ version of the HP Mini 1000 and I liked that, too.
So now it is time to make a final selection.
Netbook Price Comparison Guide
Posted by Tom Greer on April 15, 2009 in Netbook Market, Site-related
When I was writing an earlier article, I needed to know the street prices of various netbooks. I spent lots of time going to different places to find the “best” price. By the time I was done, some of the prices had changed.
I thought, there must be a better way to find the best price. So, I built our Netbook Price Comparison Guide.
This can be accessed from any page on the site by clicking on the “Compare Prices” link on the right side of the header.
Here is a sample:

New Feature: Refurbished/Open Box Netbooks
Posted by Tom Greer on April 12, 2009 in Acer Netbooks, Site-related
Many of visitors are seeking the lowest possible prices for their netbooks. A while back when we posted an article detailing some factory refurbished and open box deals, it drew a lot of attention.
So we have developed the ability to link refurbished and open box units into our price comparison pages. Knowing that not every one is interested in these, we wanted to do this as unobtrusively as possible. Our solution:
New Feature: Falling Netbook Prices
Posted by Tom Greer on March 29, 2009 in Falling Prices, Site-related
As of this morning, we have implemented a new feature that we call “Falling Netbook Prices”.
Often, we receive notices that a merchant has a netbook on sale, or has just cut their price to a new low. But frequently, when we check our price comparison tables, we see that their price was no better than others.
So we decided to build process to monitor the lowest price and to alert us whenever the price of a specific model of a netbook was $5.00 or more than the previous lowest price.
We published our first “Falling Netbook Prices” post this morning. You can see them all by clicking on the “Falling Prices” link in our list of categories at the bottom of any page.

We now provide the ability to search for netbook by price range. Click on a price range below.
I found it interesting that there are now at least 10 different netbook models that are priced at $279 or less.
Here is the current lowest priced unit:

Most of these have a Linux operating system. But at least two have Windows XP.
This list is constantly updated, so this list will change as prices do.
Search for Netbooks By Price Range
Posted by Tom Greer on March 24, 2009 in Netbook Market, Site-related
We have now added a feature that lets you search for netbooks by price range.
For example, a search for all netbooks prices less than <$300 looks like this:
The new feature appears at the top of the sidebar on our Compare Prices page.
