MSI X340 Slim Now In Stock and Shipping
Posted by Tom Greer on May 28, 2009 in MSI Ultraportables
MSI’s new X340 Slim Netbook is now in stock and shipping from several different merchants.
The X340 is one the new class of mini-laptops that blur the boundary between netbook and ultraportable notebook. With a 13.4″ display with 1366×768 resolution, the X340 is larger than traditional netbooks.
The X340 also is packed with other innovative features like:
- 1.4 GHz Intel CULV SU3500 Processor
- 2 GB RAM
- 320 GB Hard Drive
- Intel GMA 4500MHD
- 802.11b/g/n
- Bluetooth
- 4-Cell Battery
- Microsoft Vista Home Premium
Best of all, the X340 is only 0.8″ thick and weighs 2.8 lbs. That is comparable to the sexy, ultra-thin Apple MacBook Air. LaptopMag.com recently published an article comparing the two laptops. They name the X340 as the winner.
Of course, the price is a bit higher than the typical netbook as well. But, you get a lot for your money.
It is available from the merchants listed below.
Netbooks Get Bigger, More Powerful
Posted by Tom Greer on May 3, 2009 in Asus Netbooks, Dell Netbooks, HP Netbooks, MSI Netbooks, Netbook Market, Ultraportables
For a long time, it seemed every new netbook looked the same as the last: 1.6 GHz Atom N270 processor, 10-inch screen, 160 GB hard drive, etc. But recently, there have been a whole wave of netbooks featuring bigger screens, faster processors and other features unique to netbooks.
Here are the ones that we like best:
- HP Pavilion dv2
- Asus N10J
- Dell Inspiron Mini 12
- MSI Meron VR220

Falling Netbook Prices – 5/3/09
Posted by Tom Greer on May 3, 2009 in Acer Netbooks, Asus Netbooks, Falling Prices, MSI Netbooks, MSI Ultraportables, Samsung Netbooks, Ultraportables
Here is today’s list of netbooks with falling prices (that’s where today’s lowest price is $5.00 or more lower than yesterday’s lowest).
Overnight, there was a lot of pricing activity on netbooks, so today’s article is way longer than normal. So, here we go…
If you’ve been salivating over the hot new Samsung N120, then put your bib on and get your wallet out.
J&R Electronics now has it in stock and their prices are way lower ($439.99 for the Black model and $439.00 for the White).
Low-Cost Ultraportables
Posted by Tom Greer on April 4, 2009 in MSI Ultraportables, Ultraportables
While I fell in love with my first netbook (and my second…), I realize that netbooks are not ideal for everyone.
Some need an internal CD/DVD drive. Sure you can use a external drive. But if you need it frequently, it is a pain to haul around.
Others need more power. If you are doing sophisticated spreadsheets or editing videos or performing some other CPU intensive tasks, then a netbook is simply too slow.
Of course, those editing photos or graphics may need a larger screen with higher resolution.
For these the light weight and small size of the netbooks is attractive, but won’t meet their needs.
Ultralight Notebooks, also known as ultraportables, are the solution for these users. However, the price of ultraportables was skyhigh… until recently. Now, we are beginning to see low-cost ultraportables.
We think our visitors may also be interested in these. So, beginning today, we are going to begin covering low-cost ultraportables.
The first is one we have added to our Price Comparison section is the MSI VR220.

The VR220’s 12.1″ screen features a resolution of 1280×800, which is certainly an improvement over the 1024×600 resolution that most netbooks offer.
The Intel dual-core T3200/3400 processor offers a substantial performance improvement over the Atom N270 processor that powers most netbooks.
And the internal DVD-RW drive eliminates the need to haul and external drive.
But the most impressive feature is that all of this fits into an attractive case and still weighs less than four pounds.
