Eee PC 900A – News and Information

Posted by Tom Greer on August 19, 2008 in Asus Netbooks

Asus recently confirmed that they will ship a new version of the Eee PC called model 900A. There has been a lot of information published over the past week or two, so I thought it would be useful to gather the important stuff in one place.

Asus now has an official product page for the 900A. (Be sure to go to their global page, since the USA page looks very much out of date.) So we will use that as our official reference.

There are already so many models of Eee PC, what is so special about the 900A? It is the first Eee PC 900 model to have an Intel Atom processor. (apparently, A is for Atom).

Until now, if you wanted an Eee PC with an Atom processor, you needed to purchase a Eee PC 901 or Eee PC 1000.

Overall, the specification match the Aspire One rather closely. Here are the full specs from Asus:

In all of that what is new or different?

I believe that this is the first Eee PC that will be available in purple.

The battery is a four-cell unit, which sounds the same as many earlier Eee PC models. But apparently, the connector is different on this one. So if you buy a 900A and you want to carry a spare battery, you need to be sure to get the correct one.

The internal 8GB solid-state drive is the faster variety using SLC flash (per jkkmobile in previous link) slow variety. Update 8/25/08: Per jkkmobile the SSD type is the same slower kind used on the second disk on the Eee PC 900/901.

The specification above shows Linux as the only operating system option. But I would expect that, sooner or later, you will be able to get a 900A with Windows XP.

One last item of note, the webcam is only a 0.3 megapixel version. This is a downgrade from the 1.3 megapixel webcams in the other Eee PC 900 models.
