Google Android To Push XP Off Netbooks?

Google’s Android operating system (which is based on Linux) has created some inroads in the Cell Phone market.

Recently, there has been a lot of speculation that Google will expand their Android vision to include netbooks.  The popular theory is that consumers would flock to Android to the detriment of Microsoft Windows.

This all started when a couple of guys ported Android over to an Asus Eee PC 1000H and found that it performed rather well.

After that, Asus announced that they were assigning a team of engineers to study the idea.

Today, Network World published an article that claimed analysts had investigated the possibility and concluded that it was not a threat to Microsoft’s netbook OS market share.

I’m not so sure.  Something has to replace Windows XP.  Windows 7 is the odds-on favorite.  However, Microsoft has been coy about whether there will be a special version of 7 for netbooks – or special pricing (like the deal netbook manufacturers get today for XP).

If Microsoft gets stupid on Windows 7 pricing for netbooks AND Google creates a real buzz with Android, then perhaps…

There is one other scenario that would favor Google.  If netbook prices continue to drop, the price of the OS becomes a major cost item (even at the rumored $27 discounted XP price).  With Android being free, Google may be able take a big slice of the low price market.
