Netbook Demand Outstripping Component Supply

Posted by Tom Greer on April 27, 2009 in Netbook Market

In an article published today, DigiTimes is reporting that netbook parts and components are in short supply. As a result, component prices were going to rise.

DigiTimes quotes sources at DRAMeXchange who indicate that shortage is tied to the huge demand for white box netbooks by China’s 3G operators.

They report that the shortage of parts is expected to last through the end of June with the impact affecting the price of components:

IC distributors reportedly plan to hike the prices of Intel’s Atom, as well as VIA’s C7-M CPUs by 5-10%, and prices of DRAM modules by 20-30% in May, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted market sources as indicating.

So, if you are thinking of purchasing a netbook, you may want to buy one sooner rather than later.
