All this Moblin hype

Posted by Steve Greer on June 5, 2009 in Netbook Market, Netbooks, Operating Systems

There has been a lot of interest in Moblin over the last few weeks.  Xandros, Linpus, and Canonical have all announced that they are working on a Moblin distribution.

This week the developers behind Moblin have announced plans to enable Google Android applications to run on Moblin.

Giving Google Android applications the ability to run on Moblin will open up the Android app store to netbooks.  This will allow netbook users the ability to download and purchase Android Applications.

With the growing interest in Moblin and Android, it will be interesting to see how much of the netbook market is taken away from Microsoft.

NVIDIA Shows of the new Tegra GPU at Computex

Posted by Steve Greer on June 5, 2009 in Netbook Market, Netbooks, Operating Systems

If you haven’t been following the hype behind the new Tegra GPU then let me catch you up.  NVIDIA is going to be releasing their line of Tegra MIDs (some are calling it a netbook) in the near future.

NVIDIA claims that the Tegra can play 25 days audio, 10 hours of 1080p video on a single charge.  This blows away the current netbook.

The OS for the Tegra systems will be Android or Windows CE.  NVIDIA claims you can also dual boot the system if you like.   The Tegra 600 and Tegra 650 will come with Firefox as your browser.

The Tegra 600 will be able to play H.264 video at 720p and the Tegra 650 will be able to play 1080p.

RAM will be limited on the systems with standard being 512MB and going as low as 256MB.  The best part about the Tegra 600 and 650 is they will be priced at under $200.00.

Check out the video below and check out the Tegra 600 and 650 for yourself.

Netbooks for Father’s Day

Posted by Tom Greer on June 2, 2009 in Netbook Market, Netbooks, Nettops

If you are looking for a creative gift for Dad on Father’s Day (June 17th), then why not surprise him with a netbook?  It’s a gift that he’d be delighted to receive.  It’s a gift that he will use often.  Plus, it has lasting value.  He will remember your gift whenever he uses it.

Our recommendations are grouped in the tabs below.  But if you are looking for a distinctive, creative gift, then skip down to the bottom of the page.

Top Pick

If we were forced to select a single netbook, then the Samsung N120 would be our top recommendation.  Why?  We believe it offers the best value -- meaning you get the best set of features for the money.

The N120 is solidly built and is attractive.  It has one of the best netbook keyboards.  Battery life is very good.  The 10″ display is bright with crisp colors and has good clarity at wide viewing angles.

You can pick one up for Dad for only $399.00

If you are looking for a good quality netbook for a bargain price, then we recommend the Dell Inspiron Mini 10v.  At $299, you get a top-quality netbook with a 10″ display and all of the other features typical in a competitive netbook.  You simply can’t go wrong with a Mini 10v.

If you want to get this in time for Father’s Day, then you need to order now.

If you miss the window at Dell, or you are looking for another option, then we really like the Acer Aspire One D250.  Right now, the Sapphire Blue color is available from a couple of different merchants for less than $300.

The Aspire One D250 is one of the hot new netbooks that just hit the market.

What do we like about it?  Love the keyboard.  Small, good-looking and lightweight.  Plus it has all of the important features in a competitive netbook at a great price.

In the middle price range, there are a lot of options.  We like the MSI Wind U123 model with the 9-Cell battery best-of-all.

The U123 is the latest version of the Wind netbook.  The 9-Cell battery version provides over 8 hours of real-world battery life.  The Wind U123 has a good display and keyboard together with features that compare very nicely to most quality netbooks.

In the over $400 group, the Asus Eee PC 1008HA is the best option for Dad.  This just-introduced netbook is jumping off shelves everywhere, so you may find it hard to get one before Father’s Day.

The 1008HA is the lastest in a long line of Eee PCs.  This model features Asus’s new “seashell” design, which is very thin and light.  The keyboard is a welcome step up from the traditional Eee PC keyboard.

The rest of the features are rock solid and what you’d expect from the company that introduced the first commercial netbook.

Only the best!

If money is no object and you are looking for a high-end netbook for Dad, then you’ll want to look at the HP Pavilion dv2.

This system is a screamer compared to most netbooks.  It comes with a 12″ display (which makes a big difference).  The dv2 has the new AMD Neo processor and an ATI graphics accelerator.  Toogether these play HD video and games extremely well.

In addition, the Pavilion dv2 comes with  a 320GB hard drive, a DVD drive, 4GB of RAM and lots of other upgraded features.

Dad will love it.

Bargain

If you are looking for a netbook for Dad and your pocketbook is challenged, then here is a deal that won’t last long.

Compuvest is offering the HP Mini 1010NR for less than $250.  HP’s Mini is a very reliable netbook.  This model comes with a 16 GB Solid State Drive, so the amount of disk space is very limited.  Other than the small disk drive, the 1010NR has a full set of features.  This is a great little machine at a super price.

If you a re looking for a really novel gift for Dad, then consider giving him an Asus Eee Top.  This is called an “All-in-One” because the computer is built inside the flat panel touchscreen display.

This video shows the features better than I can describe in words.  Take a look:

Moblin v2.0 beta

Posted by Steve Greer on May 31, 2009 in Netbook Market, Netbooks, Operating Systems

A few weeks ago Intel released it’s Linux-based Moblin 2 Beta for Netbooks. Moblin is based on fedora and is aimed at the intel powered netbooks.

The OS looks like it is going to be a nice change up for the netbook market. Moblin and Android should give Windows 7 a run for it’s money later this year.

I’ve attached a video of Moblin v2.0 beta in use.

I also download the Live Image from the community and tried it out.

I was really impressed with the OS. It is still a little buggy, but expected being a beta release. All that said, there should be some serious interest in this OS as it get’s close to a final release.

Moblin looks like it will be a breath of fresh air when it launches. Check it out and let me know what your think.
